The tool you adopted three years ago has your data, your workflow, your team trained on its interface. Migrating would take months. That is not an accident. The switching cost is the product.
One test: could you be out in a weekend? Not in theory. In practice, with real data and a working replacement. If the answer is no, you are not using a tool. You are a tenant.
Bitcoin solved this at the protocol level. Your coins move with your keys. No institution required, no permission sought, no exit window to negotiate. Exit-readiness is not a feature. It is the baseline.
The same principle applies to software, platforms, and institutions. Design for exit while you are still inside. The dependencies you uncover are the ones that will cost you later.
